Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles! Summer camp is a one-week day camp. Our campers are girls ages 8-17 and camp will take place at Immaculate Conception School in downtown L.A. (830 Green Ave., Los Angeles 90017).

We are looking for volunteers who put the best interests of youth and their physical and emotional safety above all else, who understand and believe in our mission and who will show up every day, on time and ready to work. A variety of different volunteer positions are available. Some require musical knowledge, and many do not. Teaching, coaching, and managing positions are open to female mentors only, but there are several other positions open to all gender identities. Scroll down for volunteer position descriptions.

Application Process

In addition to filling out the online application, all new applicants are required to attend a group interview. There are three dates to choose from: Wednesday, April 1, 2015; Saturday, April 4, 2015; or Thursday, April 9, 2015. Due to the large number of applicants, we cannot schedule any other interviews.

Volunteers that are accepted are required to complete a background check prior to the start of camp.

Please note that preference is given to volunteers in the greater Los Angeles area. If you are applying from outside of the Los Angeles area, please consider applying at a girls rock camp closer to you. Visit the Girls Rock Camp Alliance website to find a camp near you, and help us grow the girls rock camp community worldwide!

Orientation & Training

There is a mandatory volunteer orientation and training session on the Sunday before camp starts at Immaculate Conception School.  Please consider this to be the first day of your volunteer shift. We will talk about what to expect from the week, how to have a fun and safe camp session, teaching strategies, troubleshooting, etc. This is also a time when volunteers get to know each other, start collaborating, and do last minute camp set up.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national and/or ethnic origin, citizenship, marital status, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability, or gender identity/expression in the administration of any of its educational programs, admissions policies, financial aid, and other Camp-related policies and programs, as well as volunteer and employment-related policies and activities.

Volunteer Positions

We offer a variety of volunteer positions, some are open to females only. Some require musical experience but many do not, and some require a full-time commitment while others may be part-time. All volunteers must be available for orientation and training. Counselors and band coaches are also required to attend the Showcase. (But seriously, who would want to miss the showcase??)

Full-time positions require you to be at camp Monday through Friday from 10am to approximately 5:30pm. You are encouraged to arrive between 9:30-10am if possible. Campers go home at 5pm but volunteers must stay for a brief meeting at the end of each day so we can go over any issues or questions.

NEW FOR 2015: Music Video Program
Volunteers with filmmaking experience needed. Positions and detailed descriptions coming soon!

Camp Counselor
No musical experience necessary, female-only, full-time.

This is one of the most rewarding volunteer positions at camp! You will serve as a mentor for your assigned band of girls, make sure they are where they need to be at all times, and attend the end of the day staff meeting each day. Camp counselors also partner with a band coach to help campers write and rehearse their original song during band practice, as well as help model a cohesive and supportive creative environment.

Band Coach
Musical skill and songwriting experience required, female-only, part-time.

Band coaches are assigned a band to help prepare an original song for the showcase. You will help the girls during band selection on the first day, and partner with a camp counselor to assist them each camp day in learning how to play as a group, both musically and interpersonally. Being able to work collaboratively is essential. Knowledge of more than one instrument is preferable.

Instrument Instructor
Proficiency on a musical instrument required, female-only, part-time.

Our campers possess a varying range of age and skill level, and many have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. We are looking for women to teach: guitar, bass, keys, drums, and vocals. You may do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction. You will also meet or email with your fellow instrument instructors at least once before orientation to decide on curriculum and what style and level of experience each instructor is comfortable teaching. Instrument Instructors must be available to teach Monday through Friday, for about 3 hours per day.  This position combines well with band coach, support crew, or workshop leader for a full day of volunteering!

Roadie
Music/production experience preferred but not required, female-preferred, part-time or full-time.

Lead by the Production Manager, you will be part of a team of people setting up, breaking down, moving around and trouble-shooting musical equipment throughout each day of the week. You will also have the option, and are encouraged to be part of the production crew at the showcase. Desirable though not required skills: setting up a simple PA system, running sound, comfortable carrying heavy objects. Any additional technical knowledge and skill equals bonus points.

Support Crew
No musical experience necessary, all genders, part-time or full-time.

Throughout the week, you will be called upon to help with daily morning set up, camper and visitor check in/out, serving lunch to volunteers, sell showcase tickets and camp merchandise, volunteer break room maintenance, errand-running, camper lunch supervision, general clean up duties, and other tasks that help everyone have a great day at Rock Camp! This is a great position for someone without musical experience who really wants to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand however needed. Various part-time and full-time shifts will be available, and we are looking for some people who can be available starting at 9am, and some who can stay until 6 or 6:30pm.

Morning/Afternoon Assembly Crew
No musical experience necessary, female-only.

This is a supplemental position open to counselors, coaches, instrument instructors, and other volunteers who are not needed elsewhere at Camp during morning and afternoon assemblies. Provide an energetic, fun and welcoming atmosphere during morning and afternoon assemblies. Lead warm up and ice breaker activities, help teach the camp song, create and participate in skits, give announcements and direction when needed. Must be articulate, outgoing, and have a great camp counselor style stage presence.

Nurse / Doctor
No musical experience necessary, all genders, part-time or full-time.

Available throughout the day as a point person for medical emergencies, minor accidents, helping campers with special medical needs, prescriptions, and assisting the receptionist and drama trauma team as needed. Combines well with other volunteer positions such as front desk, drama trauma, support crew, etc.

Workshop Leader
Specific requirements dependent on workshop details, female-only, part-time.

Each of our workshops value the development of life skills and self-esteem, as well as encourage creativity, self-expression and awareness. Each workshop is delivered 2 times over a 1-2 day period, to groups of 20-30 campers loosely divided by age. This position may supplement other volunteer positions well. If you are interested in leading a workshop, you must submit a proposal with your volunteer application, see the application for details.  Below is a partial list of some workshops that we may offer this summer, please let us know if you have another idea that is not listed here.
